Oru Fishing Boat, Dickwella Beach.
Dickwella Beach is good for watersports, at most seasons of the year. The beach is uncrowded. The local fishermen are very friendly and willing to take you out fishing or snorkelling. They may even take you spear fishing for cuttlefish! (October/November) The local inshore fishermen use the traditional oru canoes or small motor boats.
The waves are usually excellent for bodyboarding although always take advice from the local fishermen. We have some bodyboards available for hire. Standing surf boards may be hired from Dickwella Beach Hotel by the hour or you are welcome to bring your own.
Dickwella Beach, reputed to be the safest beach in the south, does not have lifeguards. So, visitors should take sensible precautions and ensure that children are always supervised. Ocean currents vary at different times of the year. Please do follow our advice or that of the knowledgeable local fishermen. Take care not to swim too close to the rocks, or scramble on their slippery surfaces.
Dickwella is a coastal market town, between Matara and Tangalle; Sometimes spelt Dikwella or Dikwalle; Also called Dikwella South.
